Computer Crimes

The Counterfeit Access Device and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1984 makes it a crime for unauthorized persons to access federal computers. It is also a crime to gain information from a computer that is protected. Protected computers are categorized as computers that are used by financial institutions, the federal government or any computer that is used for the purpose of foreign communication or commerce (Moteff 12). The Patriot Act gives the Director of the United States Secret Service the ability and authority to develop a group to deal with electronic/computer crimes (Moteff 12). The Electronic Communication Privacy Act makes it easier for authorities to track computer hackers across different jurisdictional areas. It helps lessen the amount of time to be spent on legalities by allowing investigators to get a court order from any legitimate court system rather then having to get separate court orders from each jurisdiction crossed (Moteff 13).
